Interview: By Candice Denise

Back by popular demand, another Baltimore Entrepreneur Interview!

The interview that I did with Jen of Makeup By Jen Padro did so well, that I'm excited to bring you the next person that I greatly admire here in the Baltimore area.

So, you've probably seen my posts and stories about an awesome event on
 December 12th called "WE: Love Your Workspace!" held at the West Elm in Baltimore.
Candice Denise Owens is leading this event, and she is the owner of By Candice Denise.

Candice has a strong background in event planning and producing and also consults and teaches event planning to current and potential event planners!
I don't know about you, but I am SO excited for this event.

First things first, meet Candice!

Q1: Can you tell me a little bit about yourself, your background and what you do?

 Sure. I'm Candice Denise Owens, Owner of By Candice Denise. 
I am a Creativepreneur 
(essentially that just means that I am entrepreneur that focuses on all business 
that is creative based). Under my Creativepreneur umbrella I label myself as an 
Event Specialist, Speaker and Author

My background consist of being a former Project Manager turned Event Planner. I've since changed gears from planning events to producing them and teaching other potential planners how to find the event planner within. Because of my years as a Planner and business owner, I decided to take my show on the road by going around and speaking to groups/organizations, specifically women, about what it takes to be in this industry and or to be your own boss. Most recently, I've added the title Author as I co-wrote "Planner's Unplugged: Secrets of the World's Greatest Event Planners," along with 17 other dynamic planners from across the country. 
This book doesn't teach you how to become an Event Planner, but rather how each of us have been affected personally and professionally by this industry. We hope it inspires and encourages every reader no matter their profession.

Q2: How long have you been in event planning? What kind of events do you usually plan?

I've been planning events for a little over 10 years. 
The types of events that I've planned are weddings (local & destination), celebrations (birthday, anniversary's, etc.), socially corporate (athletic events -NBA, NFL and more).

Q3: What inspired you to become your own boss? 

You know I never knew I wanted to become my own boss, but I realized it must be something that I should consider when I found that every company I worked for left me feeling unfulfilled. I thought to myself there has to be something more for me, there just has to be! Then I considered that maybe I should try this "be your own boss life" and so I did.

Q4: Can you tell us more about the event December 12th

The event is two fold:
The first half I share with attendees tips on how to add personal style to their home office space so they can become more productive, creative and inspired overall. 
The second half is where I will be signing copies of my new book, "Planners Unplugged: Secrets of the World's Greatest Event Planners". 
Lastly we will be closing the evening out with a celebration of my becoming an Author that includes a fun-filled reception once West Elm closes to include a DJ, cocktails, cupcakes and mingling.

I'm there.

Q5: What are you most looking forward to with this event? 

Honestly, EVERYTHING! 
 I genuinely am excited to see the event evolve as the evening takes place. 
From starting off with talking all about how to spruce up those drab office spaces, to signing copies of my new book, to ending the night with a little dancing and laughter. I truly am excited to meet and engage with each person that attends the event. 

Q6: What is the biggest piece of advice that you have for women 
(especially women leaders) today?

 I would say CHOOSE YOU FIRST! 
Choose your health (mental/physical), your heart, and your happiness first. We as women are always taking care of everyone else and making sure life is good for them, but we MUST take care of ourselves before anything else, it's totally okay to be a bit selfish when it comes to you. 
There's no way you can be a great leader for everyone else if you are not leading yourself in the right direction first.

I found that last part so inspiring, and I cannot wait to hear more of what she has to say December 12th. 

I have to be honest all, after speaking with Candice she is one of the most genuine and creative people I've met so far. I'm excited for you all to meet her as well.
